This property is situated on the Altiplano an area in the NE corner of Granada province and Andalusia region in the South of Spain. The plateau has an altitude of 8-900m, it is surrounded by mountains and seamed by valleys carrying the rivers out of those mountains. The area is bounded by the Natural Parks of Maria, Baza, Nevada, Castril and Cazorla, which gives a clear idea of the scenic beauty of the area. There are opportunities for almost all types of outdoor activities. The walking is exceptional, the climbing gives untouched cliffs with climbs of all grades, canoeing both white water and gentle paddling is available on the rivers and reservoirs. Mountain biking is a popular activity and hang gliding and caving are practised in the area, and in winter there is skiing in the Sierra Nevada.
The weather is conducive to outdoor living whether active or relaxing and the sun shines most days. The air quality is wonderful and in winter when the clarity is such that the snow capped mountains seem almost in reach, the views will lift the soul.
The Altiplano is grounded in agriculture with cereals, olives, almonds and livestock forming the economic bedrock of the area and the towns and villages of the countryside .There are however very few fences and the freedom to roam is almost universal. The low population density means that there is space for wildlife both winged and mammalian.
Galera is a typical small Spanish town built at the confluence of 2 rivers in a location which has been occupied by humans since pre-history. it has a rich cultural heritage which it expresses in fiestas and musical and choral groups. The necessities of life are catered for in local shops, bars, restaurants and trades people with greater varieties of all available further afield in adjoining villages towns and cities. it has a health centre, nurse and doctor available every weekday, an emergency clinic 7kms away and a general hospital 25kms away in Baza.
The road system is excellent and gives access to airports at Granada, Murcia, Almeria, Alicante and Malaga.
The house is a cave house so is unique in its arrangements and architecture. Like all cave houses it moderates the outside temperature meaning that it is cool in summer and can be kept warm in winter with very low expenditure of energy. it has a A rating for energy efficiency. Moreover being on two floors natural circulation of air keeps the rooms fresh and avoids condensation without recourse to fans other than to cope with bathrooms and cooking.
The house is approached by a road which goes above the cave descends the hill and crosses in front of the house entrance. The entry to the cave is over the patio, enclosed by raised flower beds and having a storage shed to one side. The entrance lobby is split by a glazed partition and provides storage shelves hanging space and the downstairs bathrooms hot water tank. Moving through the partition brings us to a hallway with 3 exits.
