The Castello Sforzesco of Galliate (or Castello Visconteo Sforzesco) was built by the Sforza family between 1476 and 1496 on a pre-existing Visconti fortress. It represents one of the most significant and well-known monuments in the Novara area for its magnificence and unity of plant. It occupies the northern side of Piazza Vittorio Veneto, in the heart of the city.
The current construction was commissioned by the Duke of Milan Galeazzo Maria Sforza who entrusted the project to a group of military architects led by Ambrogio Ferrari and Danesio Mainerio. The building was constructed almost immediately in the course of just one year, but the sudden death of the Duke interrupted the work, which was then resumed and completed in 1496 by Ludovico il Moro, who had the project modified by Ferrari, embellishing the rooms and opening large windows, in order to create a comfortable hunting lodge for his Milanese court. he castle of Galliate, in its original project, marked the passage from the typical feudal fortified residence, which had residential as well as war functions, to a real fortress with eminently military functions. It is known that the Duke of Burgundy Charles I, Galeazzo Marias ally, sent an embassy to Galliate to study the new type of fortification.
In 1532 the castle passed in feud to the Caravaggio branch of the Sforza family, whose founder Giovanni Paolo I Sforza and his successors boasted the title of "Marquis of Caravaggio" and "Count of Galliate". During the seventeenth century, with the Spanish occupation, there were several transformations that did not alter too much the original structure. After a period of degradation lasted almost a century, in 1878 the castle was divided among several owners who began the restoration works adapting it to their use. The eastern part was bought by the Ursuline nuns and used as a nursery school until 1968 when it was exchanged by the municipality of Galliate with the idea of building the municipal seat, but then abandoned. In the 90s of the 20th century the municipality acquired also the whole western part while the central area is still divided between two private owners.
During the 70s of the twentieth century, following the first acquisition of the castle by the municipality, was initiated a restoration to bring the building to the appearance that had to have in the fifteenth century, were then eliminated the covers, restored the upper walkway, eliminated the external windows, rebuilt the brackets etc.. When the western part of the building was purchased, it was decided to adopt the principle of conservative restoration; this is the reason why on the facade there is a clear difference between the left and the right side.
